Summer is here and that means good food and refreshing drinks as we enjoy the uncharacteristically good weather! We all know that finding a place that has excellent food, drink and atmosphere whilst remaining affordable isn’t so easy, however. If you’re looking for affordable places to eat in Northampton this summer, here are a few places we can recommend.
The Lamplighteris a friendly and relaxed pub in Overstone Road, Northampton town centre. Five minutes walk away from a car park, it’s ideally located, easy to find and has a genuinely cheerful atmosphere. The Lamplighter is a complete contradiction of a back street pub. Overstone Road is an arguably dingy street flanked by old industrial buildings and discoloured terraced houses, but don’t let that fool you. While it is hardly the biggest pub around, the newly refurbished interior has plenty of space for seating, 3 in total, and a lovely little pub garden for sunny days.
The Lamplighter has become a local favourite, not only for its beer festivals, regular live music nights and pubs quizzes but for its amazing Sunday roast lunch, which matches, if not surpasses the fanciest of Gastropubs. Their standard menu may be typical pub food, but it’s done perfectly, and is surprisingly classy, which makes it one of the best places to eat in Northampton. They also offer plenty of good vegetarian options and daily specials if you don’t fancy the regular pub fare. With most meals being an extremely generous size and coming up at under £10, you really get your money’s worth. The service has never failed to be excellent, and the food has never arrived late, even with a party of 9.
They also pride themselves on supporting and sourcing local suppliers for their quality beers and ales, something that is increasingly growing in demand. The Lamplighter is not your run of the mill back street pub. It is a gem hidden away, waiting to be discovered, and one of our favourite places to eat in Northampton.
If you’re looking for places to eat in Northampton that are a less expensive alternative to Costa or Starbucks, Daily Grind is the perfect coffee shop to visit. With grey-painted walls, rustic wooden furniture and artistic chalkboards, it is the trendy and charming equivalent of tax-avoiding high street coffee shops, whilst being less pretentious and more welcoming than the various hipster joints cropping up.
Daily Grind is probably the only coffee shop in Northampton that remains affordable whilst also having a majority of gluten-free and vegan-friendly food options on the menu. Unlike the packaged sandwiches and toasties you’d get at a chain, every single sandwich, bagel and toastie is made up fresh and has a gluten-free option, so you don’t have to compromise. The majority of the menu is healthy; think avocado, spinach and scrambled egg bagels, portobello mushroom toasties, chargrilled vegetable sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies. If you’re in the mood for an indulgent treat with your coffee, the Nutella and cheese toastie is the most amazing combo that you absolutely must try, and vegans have the luxurious dark chocolate and coconut tart to enjoy. Daily Grind is easily one of the best places to eat in Northampton for everyday vegan friendly food.
With all mains being less than £4 and all drinks being less than £3, Daily Grind gives leading coffee shop chains a run for their money. And unlike most coffee shops nowadays, the furniture isn’t all cramped in and the interior has room to breathe, making for a much more relaxed environment without people constantly shuffling past your table and elbowing you while you eat. The plants and decor add to the comfortable homely vibes, while the presentation of the food also adds to the aesthetic – thick creamy milkshakes served in mason jars, chic branded food packaging, fashionable dome-lidded plastic takeaway cups for your drinks.
Other amazing features of Daily Grind include:
-8.30pm closing time
-takeaway option on all food and drink
-daily £2-a-coffee happy hours between 10-11am and 3-4pm
-loyalty stamp cards for free coffee
